CAS number : 10025-87-3
Molecular weight :
Molecular formula/chemical symbol :Cl3OP
Description :
A colorless fuming
liquid with a pungent odor. Density 14.0 lb / gal. Very toxic by inhalation and
corrosive to metals and tissue. Used in gasoline additives and hydraulic
fluids. Phosphorus oxychloride is water reactive. Incompatible with strong
oxidizing agents, alcohols, bases (including amines). May react vigorously or
explosively if mixed with diisopropyl ether or other ethers in the presence of
trace amounts of metal salts [J. Haz. Mat., 1981, 4, 291]. Combining the
chloride with zinc dust caused immediate ignition, due to the formation of phosphine
gas which ignites, [Mellor, 1940, Vol. 8, 1025]. An exotherm starting with the
mixing of Phosphorus oxychloride with acetone (a ketone) lead to an explosion,
may behave similarly with other ketones, [Organic Process Research and
Development, Vol.4, No. 6,200, "Phosphorus oxychloride and Acetone: An
Incompatibility Investigation Using ARC."]
USES :
Used as a semiconductor dopant, and a raw material for optical fibers.
Widely used in the production of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, phosphate flame retardants. Raw materials of manufacturing organophosphorus pesticides herbicides, chlordimeform. Used in the production of plastic plasticizer. Also used in the chlorination of the long-acting sulfa drugs, the production of dyes intermediates, organic synthesis chlorinating agent and catalyst, uranium extraction agent.
The raw material for manufacture of organophosphorus pesticide chlordimeform. For the production of diphenyl - iso-octyl phosphate, and triethyl phosphate and the production of plastic plasticizer. For the chlorination reaction of the long-acting sulfa drugs. Production of dye intermediates, organic synthesis chlorinating agent and catalyst, uranium extraction agent.
Mainly used for synthesis of another type of phosphorus-containing intermediates - the phosphorus oxychloride or phosphorus acid dichloride, such as a synthetic O, O-diethyl-phosphoryl chloride, in the synthesis of organophosphorus pesticides, and then the synthetic pesticides ethylthio ring, naphthalene, or syntheticO-ethyl dichloride, thus the synthetic pesticides Ethoprophos.
In other aspects, the phosphorus oxychloride can be used as the chlorinating agent, catalyst, plasticizer, dye intermediates. Also used in the pharmaceutical industry and organic synthesis.
